I recently realized I have old makeup that I don’t want to use anymore (especially because it has been there since God knows when) so I decided to do a little cleanup. Before throwing it in the trash, I researched about how to recycle it and I want to share what I found with you.
RECOMMENDATION: You should do a little cleanup too. You might have old makeup that might be expired and you don’t even know it is. You can check out our Learn Labeling on Cosmetic Products: Start Buying More Consciously! post to learn about how to check for expiration dates.
I want to start by telling you that it would be better if you choose brands that use recyclable packaging because this makes everybody’s life easier. But besides that, it would be better if you support these brands because they are trying to make this place a better place to live. We need to recognize that it’s not an easy task and they should be recognized for it. Makeup is not easy to recycle because you cannot just toss it in your municipal recycle bin. Thankfully, the brands I’m going to introduce to you next have come to save us. For some of them, you can even get a reward for recycling your old makeup.
Since 2009, this beauty chain that sells skincare, hair, and beauty products started their own recycling program. They create natural products and are cruelty-free. You can recycle any of their products (even travel size, deluxe, and complementary products) but only full-size products will get you a stamp. 10 stamps equal a reward, which would be a 2.50z travel-size product. You can only redeem one reward per month, but you can recycle as many times as you want.
MAC – BACK 2 MAC PROGRAM
If you already love MAC and love their products then you are going to love this. You can return six primary packaging containers to a MAC freestanding store or counter (except in Massachusetts and airports) or you can do it online in here. The fun part is that you will receive a free lipstick (excluding any of the Viva Glam shades) of your choice as a reward for recycling. You cannot return or exchange these lipsticks because they were given to you at no charge.
I love LUSh because they are all about the 3 R’s. Almost everything at LUSH is made of recycled material and you can you can recycle it again too. LUSH products can be easily recycled in your municipal recycling system but you can also bring them to a LUSH store and win a reward. If you return five clean, empty pots to one of their stores, you’ll even get a free fresh face mask 😍 Their masks are made of natural ingredients so it’s a win-win for you.
<<<< h B. is an Italian brand that is vegan, cruelty-free and free of all the bad stuff. I encourage you to join them in their movement of simplification. If you purchase from them, you will receive a return, prepaid shipping label to send them your old makeup products (any brand) and they will recycle them for you. And my favorite...
